A Sense of Place, PPASP Juried Group Show Reception, June 7

(Image: Seeking Andrew by Katherine van Schoonhoven)

Announcing a Juried Group Exhibit of paintings by members of PPASP

“Plein Air” refers to painting outdoors on location. “Alla Prima”, similarly, describes a painting technique in which a canvas is completed in one sitting. Plein air and Alla Prima artists are considered direct painters and seldom work from photographs. In the Plein Air/Alla Prima tradition, brushstrokes and drawings will have a distinctive loose and flowing style.

The exhibit A Sense of Place consists of paintings completed exclusively with either Plein Air or Alla Prima methods, employing “first hand observation”.
Juror: Karen Van Hoy
Exhibit Dates June 7-August 29, 2009

Tuesday, May 12, painting opportunity with Hood River Painters..and a message

The weather on Thursday was NOT any better than Tuesday. Six of us met at Dog River Coffee. We came up with a list of places where we would like to paint this summer. Here is the list, to date: Tom McCall Preserve, Husum Falls, Dog Creek Falls, Bonneville Dam, Skamania Interpretive Center, Skamania Lodge, Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, Conboy Wildlife Refuge in Glenwood, Wind River Winery, Oakridge Vineyard, Starvation Creek, Drano Lake, Balfour or Lyle Point, Horsethief Lake and Butte, and Deschutes Park. I would like to add The Gorge White House and Rasmussen Farms (when the sunflowers are in bloom) to that list.

A couple of the locations mentioned are private and are subject to agreement and arrangement with the property owner, so, it is a suggested list and will be worked out over the next couple of weeks.

The list has only three repeat locations from last year, so you can see that we have an exciting summer ahead of us.

Thursday's group actually did run out to Mayer State Park and attempt to paint. A couple of the easels were damaged by the strong wind and we all ended up folding before much painting was done.

Jan M. and I drove up to Tom McCall Preserve and walked around taking photos. The balsam root was beautiful and the lupine was just opening up. The flowers should be in full bloom this Tuesday which is why we have chosen Tom McCall Preserve for our painting location. The closest restroom is Mayer State Park.

Here is a mapquest link. I hope it works. If not--go to www.mapquest.com and type in Tom McCall Preserve and The Dalles, OR

Hope to see you on Tuesday...... Bonnie

UPDATED! Tuesday, May 5, painting opportunity with Hood River Painters

(Photos from last Tuesday)
Message from Bonnie White:
The BZ Corner Store plan has been scrapped (for now)!

Let's meet at Dog River Coffee in Hood River tomorrow morning at 8:45 a.m. and go from there. We can either paint on the library lawn, move down to the port, or go to some other park in town. The weather doesn't look any better for Thursday so it is tomorrow or cancel. I will be there. Thanks. Bonnie

P.S. If it is raining, I am sure we can paint from a table from Dog River, using the interior lights.
