5th ANNUAL HILLSBORO PLEIN AIR (Hillsboro, OR)

Join the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council for the 5^th Annual Hillsboro Plein Air Competition on July 15^th and 16^th!

Artists can enjoy painting the sights and scenes of historic downtown Hillsboro, the Saturday Farmer’s Market and—new this year—the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. Painters can compete in three categories: Landscape, City Scene and Figurative Quick Draw, with cash prizes in each category.

Contestants may check in as early as 9 am on Friday, July 15^th at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Artists must have their canvases stamped at the time of check-in to enter them in the competition. All entries are due at 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 16^th at the Arts Center.

A Figurative “Quick Draw” event will take place on July 16^th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Arts Center. Costumed models from Lavender’s Green Historic Clothing will provide a historically themed tableaux vivant or “living picture” for painters to capture during the Quick Draw event.

A catered reception and award ceremony will close the event on Saturday, July 16^th at 2:30 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Arts Center.

Local artist Kitty Wallis will judge the competition. Wallis is a professional painter and pastel artist, who has painted and taught across the country for more than 40 years. She is also the inventor and manufacturer of Wallis Sanded Paper for Artists.

Painters ages 16 and up are welcome to participate. There is a $25.00 registration fee for each participant. All participating artists are invited to leave their works to be exhibited at the Walters Cultural Arts Center during the month of August.

You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy this event! The public is welcome to experience the creative process in action or join the artists for the closing reception and wine tasting on July 16^th.

All proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve.

Utrecht's 4th Annual Plein Air in the Park--Saturday, July 10

(from an email from Utrecht) Plein Air in the Park will take place on Saturday, July 10th from 12pm to 4pm to correspond with the Pearl District's Bastille Day celebrations in Jamison Park. Our event will be located in the NW Park blocks between Davis and Everett. Everyone is invited to bring easels and painting supplies. As in years past, Utrecht Art Supplies will provide some materials for passers-by who would like to try their hand at painting en plein air, and will provide water, snacks and free gifts for the “featured artists” as a thank-you for your participation. Five days of plein air painting in the Columbia River Gorge Join Elio Camacho for five days of plein air painting instruction on the Columbia River Gorge. Elio studied under Russian Impressionist Ovanes Berberian and is influenced by master impressionists such as Bongart, Sorrolla, and Fechin. Elio is was named "Artist to Watch" in the July 2009 Issue of Southwest Art. If you want to learn to fill your canvases with color and boldness then this class may be for you. Some of the things we will cover are:

• Stroke angle and how it affect depth in thick loose strokes
• Properly holding a brush to ensure you have limitless possibilities with your strokes
• Brush speed
• Time management and capturing the moment: The question most often asked is “how do you deal with the changing light”. We will cover efficient ways of painting so you dont waste strokes or motions.
• Forget formulas and learn to “SEE”: Learning see nature as paint.
• Color temperature
• Harmony
• Each day will end with a group critique

3. July 15 and 16, 2010

Cultural Arts Center Hillsboro, Oregon Join Elio Camacho for this special two day Plein Air workshop preceding the Hillsboro Plein Air Painting Event on July 17th. Painters will join Elio at various Hillsboro locations and brush up on their skills while painting the town. Elio’s colorful approach to painting and his sunny disposition are guaranteed to inspire.

Students will need to bring all their own materials and will be given a map to locate Elio after they check in at the Arts Center the morning of the first day.

7/15 & 7/16 Day: Thursday and Friday Time: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Fee: $175 Blurb in the front of the catalog: On Saturday, July 17, the Cultural Arts Center will host Hillsboro Plein Air: An Outdoor Painting Event and Competition sponsored by the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Council. "Good News"! Hood River (OR) area Plein Air Artists Tuesday 4/13/10

A message from Bonnie White:

Tuesday is supposed to be cloudy with a chance of rain but I thought we could get the season started anyway by going to Good News Gardening. They have tons of bright and cheerful flowers to paint and I was out there the other day while the rain was pouring and it even sounded good coming down on the greenhouses. If it gets too cold they have food and coffee at the Cafe. I'll be there at 9:00 a.m. if not before.

The address is 1086 Tucker Road, which is on the heights. If you are coming from Portland, take the first Hood River exit going east. Turn right. You will be on Cascade. Follow Cascade to the first stop light which will be 13th. Take a right on 13th. Go up the hill past the hospital, keep going through the business district (you will go through two stop lights). The road turns into Tucker Road. When it narrows after the second stop light, continue on until you reach 2086 Tucker Road on your right. It is right before the first big curve in the road. For parking, you can continue around the corner to the parking in the Church lot, which is clearly marked. You enter the gardens through the gate in the back. From the west, take the city center exit. Turn right on Oak Street, continue to 13th Street. Take a left on 13th and follow that road up past the hospital, through the two stop lights to 1086 Tucker Road on the right.

Eugene: A message from Brooks Hickerson

The "Save the Schoolhouse" Crestwell group is working to save their old school house at 2nd and D street, built in 1874. They have invited us to paintout at the schoolhouse October 7, 2009. They have also arranged a show for our paintings at the Crestwell Library. Paul Viel worked all this out for us. Thank you Paul. This is a great opportunity to paint in Crestwell and have a plein air show in Crestwell. I have put "Crestwell School house"on our October Calender (Wed. Today, Sept. 21st, the art supplies go on sale at the Duck Store on 13th. Most of their art supplies will be 20% off for the next month.

Saturday, Sept. 26th, is the date to bring your paintings to Emeral Art Center, 500 Main St. between 11am and 4pm, to enter the Springfield Mayors Art Show. The prospectus is on the EAC website: http://www.emeraldartcenter.org/.
The Springfield Show is a fun event. More like the Refuse in Eugene than the Eugene Mayor art show. All paintings that meet the prospectus criteria are hung. Your painting does not have to be jurored into the show. So bring a painting to the EAC this Saturday.

Friday, October 2nd, pick up our paintings at the Island Park Gallery in the Willamalane Center at C st. and Mill St. This is a very good show. I recommend it to anyone has not seen it yet. I have been several times. The Willamalane Staff, specifically Emily Heilbrun, did a great job of hanging this show and making cards for us titled "In the Open Air"...good name for a plein air show. Thanks Emily.

Chamber Music Amici the first resident company of the Richard E. Wildish Community Theatre in cooperation with Emerald Art Center is sponsoring an art contest to select art to be used on posters. They will select 5 paintings, drawings or designs ‘that capture the beauty and excitement of chamber music' to be used for publicity purposes for the 2010-2011 season. There is a stipend of $100 to be paid the artist for the use of the image on the posters.
