Join the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council for the 5th Annual Hillsboro Plein Air Competition on July 15th and 16th!
Artists can enjoy painting the sights and scenes of historic downtown Hillsboro, the Saturday Farmer’s Market and—new this year—the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. Painters can compete in three categories: Landscape, City Scene and Figurative Quick Draw, with cash prizes in each category.
Contestants may check in as early as 9 am on Friday, July 15th at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Artists must have their canvases stamped at the time of check-in to enter them in the competition. All entries are due at 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 16th at the Arts Center.
A Figurative “Quick Draw” event will take place on July 16th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Arts Center. Costumed models from Lavender’s Green Historic Clothing will provide a historically themed tableaux vivant or “living picture” for painters to capture during the Quick Draw event.
A catered reception and award ceremony will close the event on Saturday, July 16th at 2:30 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Arts Center.
Local artist Kitty Wallis will judge the competition. Wallis is a professional painter and pastel artist, who has painted and taught across the country for more than 40 years. She is also the inventor and manufacturer of Wallis Sanded Paper for Artists.
Painters ages 16 and up are welcome to participate. There is a $25.00 registration fee for each participant. All participating artists are invited to leave their works to be exhibited at the Walters Cultural Arts Center during the month of August.
You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy this event! The public is welcome to experience the creative process in action or join the artists for the closing reception and wine tasting on July 16th.
All proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve.
