Join the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council for the 5^th Annual Hillsboro Plein Air Competition on July 15^th and 16^th!

Artists can enjoy painting the sights and scenes of historic downtown Hillsboro, the Saturday Farmer’s Market and—new this year—the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. Painters can compete in three categories: Landscape, City Scene and Figurative Quick Draw, with cash prizes in each category.

Contestants may check in as early as 9 am on Friday, July 15^th at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Artists must have their canvases stamped at the time of check-in to enter them in the competition. All entries are due at 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 16^th at the Arts Center.

A Figurative “Quick Draw” event will take place on July 16^th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Arts Center. Costumed models from Lavender’s Green Historic Clothing will provide a historically themed tableaux vivant or “living picture” for painters to capture during the Quick Draw event.

A catered reception and award ceremony will close the event on Saturday, July 16^th at 2:30 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Arts Center.

Local artist Kitty Wallis will judge the competition. Wallis is a professional painter and pastel artist, who has painted and taught across the country for more than 40 years. She is also the inventor and manufacturer of Wallis Sanded Paper for Artists.

Painters ages 16 and up are welcome to participate. There is a $25.00 registration fee for each participant. All participating artists are invited to leave their works to be exhibited at the Walters Cultural Arts Center during the month of August.

You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy this event! The public is welcome to experience the creative process in action or join the artists for the closing reception and wine tasting on July 16^th.

All proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve.

HOW TO APPLY
Applicants are asked to submit 6 digital images of their Plein Air artwork and an artist statement through www.callforentry.org (CaFÉ ™). Please visit the CaFÉ™ website for complete instructions on how to apply. The entry fee is $25. All applications must be submitted by midnight (Mountain Time) on Friday June 24, 2011. Columbia Center for the Arts will not accept applications directly.

ELIGIBILITY
Any resident of the United States and Canada is eligible to apply. However, upon acceptance, artwork delivered to the exhibition must have been painted on location (in Plein Air) in the last two years in the Pacific Northwest: British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Idaho, or Western Montana.

DEFINITION
For this exhibition, at least 90% of the painting must be completed onsite and outdoors to be considered “Plein Air.”

LOCATION
The Pacific Northwest is a Plein Air Painter’s Paradise. Each year, artists gather in the Columbia River Gorge to take in the stunning beauty of its black basalt cliffs, ribbon-like waterfalls, and lush fir forests. In November 1986, Congress recognized the unique beauty of the Gorge when it made it the nation's first National Scenic Area. A 25th Anniversary celebration for the Gorge will be taking place all year and, fortunately for us, the Gorge Commission will be marketing this special place to increase awareness and bring tourism to the area.

This protected area offers a diverse range of climate zones for artists to paint all within a 60 mile radius. Nestled along the Columbia River, Hood River sits between the two snow-capped volcanoes, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Just a 10-minute drive to the East takes you to the Transitional Zone where the Cascade Mountain Range meets the Desert. The High Desert and Deschutes River are 35 minutes further. To the West, visitors can wander the temperate rain forest and discover alpine lakes and streams. Portland is 1-hour West of Hood River and the scenic Oregon Coast is 2.5 hrs West of Hood River.

SELECTION PROCESS
Phase 1: Artists interested in being featured in the Plein Air Exhibition in September need to apply now and be pre-screened through CaFÉ in order to be included in the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Exhibition. During this initial review, a panel comprised of regional art collectors, artists, and arts professionals will evaluate the submitted images (these images must be examples of your actual Plein Air artwork) to determine if the artist will be invited to participate in the exhibition in September. Approximately 35 artists will be selected based on the Plein Air images they submit. However, the submitted images are not necessarily pieces that are committed to the show; it is our hope that the selected artists will create new pieces specifically for the exhibition and participate in the hosted Paint-out Event. All artists who apply will receive electronic notification of the results of the screening process. Notification will be sent to the email address supplied when applying through CaFÉ.

Phase 2: The Artists identified by the screening committee will be featured in the September Exhibition. Accepted artists are highly encouraged to participate in the paint out event during the week prior to the show opening. Participating in the Paint-out is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend it as, historically, the majority of the artwork sold during the exhibition is created during the Paint-out.

All artwork must be original in concept and executed by the artist within the last two years. Compositions taken from published material or involving copyright infringement issues will not be considered. No student work under supervision is eligible. No work previously featured in the Columbia Gorge Region will be accepted. Artists may deliver up to 5 pieces, with the understanding that there may not be room for all entries in the show. Each accepted artist will show at least 3 pieces. Accepted artists will receive follow up instructions including a detailed prospectus and a site map of the Paint-out locations.

EXHIBITION JUROR
We are pleased to announce that the juror for the 2011 Pacific Northwest Plein Air Exhibition is Jim Lamb. Jim is a respected member of the Plein Air Painters of America, a resident of the Pacific Northwest, and an exceptional judge for Plein Air painting.
Once the exhibition is hung, Jim will select the top paintings which will receive ribbons, cash awards and/or gifts. Recipients of the juror’s awards are automatically invited to participate in the exhibition next year (2012) and need not be screened.

AWARDS AND PRIZES
1st Place • 2nd Place • 3rd Place Artists Choice • Best of Columbia River • Best of Historical• 2 Honorable Mention • People’s Choice Prize (details to be announced at a later date).

SUBMISSION
Fine art media will be accepted in the following categories: Oil • Acrylic • Watercolor • Pastel

SIZE
Artwork, including frames, shall not exceed 50 inches in either direction. Minimum image size: 2” x 3”.

PRESENTATION
Artwork must be professionally framed, * wired and ready for hanging. Required details include: Wire in good condition, flat D-rings used on frames, cleaned up canvas edges without visible staples. No work will be accepted with screw-in eye hooks (unless the eye hooks are not protruding beyond the back of the frame) or metal tooth hangers. If you don’t know what these are - please ask and we will be happy to explain.
*Contemporary painters sometimes present their work unframed. This will be acceptable as long as the canvas or wood edge is at least 1.5” thick, and the edges are finished in a professional manner with cleaned up canvas edges and without visible staples. All other hanging requirements will be the same.

SALES
Work must be FOR SALE and priced with intent to sell. • 60% to the artist • 40% commission supports Columbia Art Gallery, a non-profit community art gallery

SHIPPING
If you live outside the local area and wish to ship a piece to or from the show, all packaging, shipping, insurance and related costs are the responsibility of the artist. Artist is to provide all packing material (box, foam, label) for artwork that will be mailed back to artist after the show. Artist will also make arrangements in advance to cover shipping costs.

EXHIBITION DELIVERY AND PICK UP
All hand-delivered artwork must be delivered to Columbia Art Gallery prior to or on Monday, August 29 between noon and 5:00 pm. You may also ship artwork in advance to arrive prior to or on Monday, August 29, 2011 to Columbia Art Gallery, 215 Cascade Street, Hood River, OR 97031. All artists will fill out an Artwork Submission form for artwork entries that includes: Artist Name, Title of Work, Size and Price. This list is your receipt for entries, and must be presented when picking up any and all work. Please pick up all unaccepted entries. Accepted entries, regardless of whether they are sold, may not be removed until close of show. All unsold works must be removed promptly at the end of the show to make room for the next show. Art not picked up within 60 days after the close of the show will become property of the Columbia Art Gallery.

Ned Mueller, accomplished and esteemed artist and teacher, has been painting and teaching for over 45 years. He is a Signature member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America and a Master Signature Member of Oil Painters of America. Ned has participated in most of the major Plein Air shows in the country and won the Grand Prize of $5000 last year at the Easton Plein Air Show (one of the most successful shows in the country).

Class Description:

"This class will cover the process and all of the important principles of making a successful plein air painting. You will learn how to achieve color harmony, learn how to see more "abstractly", how to edit and enhance the scene you are painting to achieve more dynamic compositions and to find your own style and voice to become a more astute and perceptive plein air artist. Plein Air Painting Workshop at the Lloyd Baron Rhododendron Garden Friday & Saturday May 20 & 21

Join landscape artist Aimee Erickson for a two day intensive plein air painting workshop. Come spend two days painting en plein air! Working outside directly from nature is challenging, inspiring and rewarding. Learn to adjust to changing conditions of light and weather. Capture the beauty you see in the landscape. Increase your understanding of atmospheric perspective to achieve a greater sense of depth in your paintings. There will be a demonstration on the first morning with individual instruction following at your own easel.

Painters will need to bring their own supplies. Aimee recommends working on 9x12 inch canvas or canvas board but students are welcome to work in any size. The rhodies will be in bloom so get out your colors! For those new to plein air, Aimee works and teaches in oils but can accommodate acrylics. Hey all PPASPers (and friends of PPASP too)....just a reminder that Artist 2 Artist is on this Saturday. If you haven't already signed up, you can register online or at the gallery.

The focus for this day-long workshop is to provide artists with some practical information about opportunities that currently exist for artists in Oregon and Washington. The Keynote speaker is Gigi Rosenberg who is a writer, speaker, presentation coach, and author of The Artist’s Guide to Grant Writing: How to Find Funds and Write Foolproof Proposals for the Visual, Literary, and Performing Artist.

In addition to Gigi’s talk, there will be a moderated panel discussion of artists who have successful experiences of getting paid for more than just their artwork. The Panelists bring expertise in education, strategic grant writing, commercial enterprise, artist residencies, and commissions.

This year the Gallery has been overwhelmed with the number of artists who question their prices and quality of work just because things aren’t selling. It’s important for artists to recognize that it’s not your artwork—it’s the economy! That said, there are things you can do about it! I encourage you to spend $25* and attend this development event (free parking and brunch is included—what a deal!) and get motivated on some actions you can take to further your art career.

Call for Artists: Broderick Gallery May Day Show

Rainier, Or, April 3, 2011-- Calling all Artists to submit to May Day, an exhibit to be shown at Broderick Gallery; May 1-23 in Rainier, OR. Gallery owner George Broderick is now accepting submissions and will serve as juror.

This show will open May 1st and Close on May 23. The show is open to all artists.

Submission Guidelines:  

1. An artist may submit 1-3 jpegs of their work for consideration. Oils, acrylic, or watercolor.

2. Submissions will be accepted via email to: george@broderickgallery.com

3. There is a submission fee per image (see item #8 below)

4. Please send quality images, 1000 pixels on the longest side, 180 dpi.

5. Do not refer us to websites for image submission.  

6. Include contact information (name, address, email, and phone.)  

7. Include title of piece, media, dimensions and price. All work must be original and for sale. The commission is 40% to the Gallery.

8. The submission fee is 5 dollars per image submitted. For those who would like to explore other aspects of the Human Figure I will be offering special Sunday afternoon workshops on The Front and Back of the Torso, June 26th and July 24th, 1-5pm.

Daniel will be offering Sunday afternoon workshops beginning March 13th (I know its kind of late) but they will continue on March 27th and then the second Sunday each month throughout the summer minus the Marathon Sunday, April 10th.

Drop-in Drawing Sessions

and Long-Term Pose
Our regular schedule of drop-in sessions will continue uninterrupted throughout the Summer except possibly August 10th, depending on if I decide to finally take a short vacation. The Saturday morning sessions have been very popular lately but Wednesday afternoons and evenings have been moderate in their attendance.
The Long-term pose will be offered on three Thursdays each month throughout the summer. Check the
website for specific dates.

Performances and Special Events
Hipbone continues as an increasingly popular venue for all sorts of performance-related arts, be it theater, dance, music or multi-media. Also, all sorts of seminars, workshops, private parties, etc., not specifically related to the visual arts, have chosen Hipbone as their venue. See "Rent Hipbone" on our website and the photos of Hipbone's set-up as a theater to get an idea of it's versatility.

We have another wonderful show this month featuring the latest works by Ridgefield artist Oleg Ulitskiy. In 2010 Oleg returned to his hometown of Odessa Ukraine for several weeks to paint the beautiful port city and its incredible architecture. Oleg's latest collection of oil paintings includes many pieces from his Odessa trip and also paintings of his favorite local subjects including several barns, rivers, vineyards and fields from around the Northwest. The show runs March 4th - 26th. The opening reception is on First Friday March 4th from 5 to 9. Come down and enjoy live music, light complimentary refreshments, chat with Oleg and see some great art!

Put life and personality into your landscapes. We will focus on the fundamentals of landscape painting while exploring the beauty and atmosphere of the area.
10am-4pm (I like to paint the light of morning and evening best and my students are always welcome to join me for informal sunrise and sunset paint outs at no additional charge.)

You will learn the importance of observation rather than using formulas and recipes to paint what you actually see and feel. Through instruction, demonstrations, and critiques, this workshop explores composition and design, value and color harmony, and brushwork and edges. Students will also focus on recreating a some of the atmospheric situations the Oregon Coast offers.

I like to concentrate on the basic elements of painting and will include an exercise or two to reinforce some of the basics that we all need to brush up on from time to time. There will be at least one black & white exercise, and the chance to paint full color studies as well. At the end of the three days there will be time for a discussion about your work and for questions as a group.

The workshop is open to oil painters of any level.

Bring photo references in case we have to paint inside due to extreme weather.

Demonstrations will be directed at oil painters, but concepts and principles will apply to all media.

"Quick Draw"! Saturday September 25, 2010

WHAT:   The Columbia Art Gallery Pacific Northwest Plein Air 2010 Quick Draw is an opportunity for everyone to experience painting "en plein air"! This 5.5 hour painting event is open to anyone. Whether you’ve never painted outdoors before or you are a "veteran" —you are welcome! The day ends with the opportunity to show your work at the Gallery during the special Quick Draw Reception. The registration fee is $10 when you register in advance, $15 at the door. All artists may use any medium, but must paint in the plein air tradition (outdoors, in “real time”).

WHEN:  Saturday, September 25, 2010 (Check-in: 9:00 am) Event runs from 9-2:30pm.

WHERE:  Columbia Art Gallery, 215 Cascade Street, Hood River, OR 97031 (Paint in Downtown Hood River and the Hood River Marina).

HOW:  Interested artists will fill out an application. The deadline is September 25, 2010. Registration is $10 when paid in advance and $15 when paid at the door. Checks should be made out to Columbia Art Gallery (or pay online HERE). For more information, contact Celeste Bergin 503 774 3787.

On Saturday, September 25, between 9 am and 9:30 am, check in at Columbia Art Gallery to have your blank canvases stamped and pick up your title & price labels. You may paint as many canvases as you want, but only two pieces will go into the one-evening reception show. You may paint anywhere in Downtown Hood River and at the Hood River Marina. For those interested in painting the figure a model will be located on the lawn of the library. The Quick draw art must be created during the Quick draw time frame.

Your paintings must be delivered to the gallery at 2:30. Each painting is required to be for sale and to have a title and a price written on the label. Paintings will be on display for sale with 60% proceeds going to the artist. We recommend that artists interested in displaying bring a wired frame that fits your supports, or use gallery wrap canvas.

The Columbia Art Gallery will hold a Reception from 6-8pm on Saturday September 25.

Note: This is Columbia Art Gallery’s first year doing a “quick draw” and it is meant to be a no- stress positive event that will expand every successive year. The first 25 registrants will receive a surprise gift and there will be "incentives" announced at the reception. See you there!

Todd Smith at the Gorge White House

Mostly retired from a 30-year career as an architectural illustrator, Todd is finding in the Gorge area fascinating and challenging subject matter for his painting. After using watercolor as a primary medium for so many years, he has found his true love in oil painting.

The Gorge area offers an immense variety of painting subjects to stimulate his creativity, from dramatic cliffs and water in many forms to farms and historically chararacterful urban architecture.

He began enjoying the qualities of oil paints in the early ‘90s as a balance to his commercial illustration. Inspiration to try oils came from decades earlier when, at art school, he had admired the work of fine art painting students with whom he was living while he obtained a transportation design degree.

But it was a long journey to arrive at oil painting. For a number of years early in his career he was an automobile designer. He then left to obtain an MFA in ceramic sculpture. He also spent several years teaching drawing, color sketching, graphic design and product design at Arizona State University.

Today, Todd relishes the opportunity to share his responses to all the visual stimulants present in this prime scenic area.

(from an email from Utrecht) Plein Air in the Park will take place on Saturday, July 10th from 12pm to 4pm to correspond with the Pearl District's Bastille Day celebrations in Jamison Park. Our event will be located in the NW Park blocks between Davis and Everett. Everyone is invited to bring easels and painting supplies. As in years past, Utrecht Art Supplies will provide some materials for passers-by who would like to try their hand at painting en plein air, and will provide water, snacks and free gifts for the “featured artists” as a thank-you for your participation. Five days of plein air painting in the Columbia River Gorge Join Elio Camacho for five days of plein air painting instruction on the Columbia River Gorge. Elio studied under Russian Impressionist Ovanes Berberian and is influenced by master impressionists such as Bongart, Sorrolla, and Fechin. Elio is was named "Artist to Watch" in the July 2009 Issue of Southwest Art. If you want to learn to fill your canvases with color and boldness then this class may be for you. Some of the things we will cover are:

Stroke angle and how it affect depth in thick loose strokes
Properly holding a brush to ensure you have limitless possibilities with your strokes
Brush speed
Time management and capturing the moment: The question most often asked is “how do you deal with the changing light”. We will cover efficient ways of painting so you dont waste strokes or motions.

3. July 15 and 16, 2010

Cultural Arts Center Hillsboro, Oregon Join Elio Camacho for this special two day Plein Air workshop preceding the Hillsboro Plein Air Painting Event on July 17th. Painters will join Elio at various Hillsboro locations and brush up on their skills while painting the town. Elio’s colorful approach to painting and his sunny disposition are guaranteed to inspire.

Students will need to bring all their own materials and will be given a map to locate Elio after they check in at the Arts Center the morning of the first day.

"Good News"! Hood River (OR) area Plein Air Artists Tuesday 4/13/10

A message from Bonnie White:

Tuesday is supposed to be cloudy with a chance of rain but I thought we could get the season started anyway by going to Good News Gardening. They have tons of bright and cheerful flowers to paint and I was out there the other day while the rain was pouring and it even sounded good coming down on the greenhouses. If it gets too cold they have food and coffee at the Cafe. I'll be there at 9:00 a.m. if not before.

The address is 1086 Tucker Road, which is on the heights. If you are coming from Portland, take the first Hood River exit going east. Turn right. You will be on Cascade. Follow Cascade to the first stop light which will be 13th. Take a right on 13th. Go up the hill past the hospital, keep going through the business district (you will go through two stop lights). The road turns into Tucker Road. When it narrows after the second stop light, continue on until you reach 2086 Tucker Road on your right. It is right before the first big curve in the road. For parking, you can continue around the corner to the parking in the Church lot, which is clearly marked. You enter the gardens through the gate in the back. From the west, take the city center exit. Turn right on Oak Street, continue to 13th Street. Take a left on 13th and follow that road up past the hospital, through the two stop lights to 1086 Tucker Road on the right.

I hope you are enjoying the start of Spring! First Friday is right around the corner and this month we have another great show “Oleg Ulitskiy, New Works”. The show opens on First Friday April 2nd and goes through May 1st. The show will feature a stunning new collection of oil paintings by Ridgefield artist Oleg Ulitskiy. As a dedicated and talented plein air artist, Oleg spends countless hours painting on location battling fast changing light and the elements to capture the beauty of the Northwest’s landscape from rural farm scenes in SW Washington, to the Columbia River Gorge. Oleg’s dedication to painting directly from nature is evident in both
his plein air and his studio work, which results in beautifully composed paintings, both rich in color and atmosphere.

The First Friday evening reception on April 2nd from 5 to 9 pm is open to the public at no charge and includes an opportunity to meet Oleg and enjoy complimentary light refreshments and live music.

Event: Portland State University Art Exhibition Committee seeks submissions
Accepting Submissions: March 15 - April 15, 2010

Littman and White Galleries are seeking submissions from local
artists. The White Gallery is a small, less formal gallery space along
the walls of a student lounge area. It can house matted works on paper
that can be mounted behind glass directly onto the walls. The media
shown in the White is usually photographs, prints, collages and/or
drawings. The white Gallery is open: Mondays – Fridays 7am-10pm,
Saturdays 8am-10pm and Sundays 10am-5pm.

The Littman Gallery is a fully enclosed, secured gallery space. It
encompasses approximately 1,500 square feet, 140 running feet of wall
space and an average ceiling height of 10 feet. Everything from
paintings to installations can be exhibited within the space. The
Littman Gallery is open: Mondays – Fridays 12-4pm.

Capture the Light and Atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest with a 5 Day Portland-area Plein Art Workshop with Thomas Kitts Dates: August 16 - 20, 2010

This workshop is open to all levels of experience! It is intended for anyone who would like to day-trip out of the Portland area and still get home early in the evening. All painting locations will be easily accessible. Your five days of instruction will focus on how to paint outdoors, under natural light, using oil.

In this workshop, you will learn to solve many of the problems that confront the plein air painter. Instructional emphasis will be placed upon unifying your color, creating a dynamic composition, and how to paint with a swift, yet assured, painterly technique. Most of the instruction will occur outdoors in front of the easel, but you can expect this class to increase your confidence and ability to paint anywhere, anytime -- indoors or out!

As Thomas assesses your strengths and weaknesses, his instruction will be tailored to meet your individual needs, even as you paint with the rest of the group. A portable easel and some basic oil painting supplies will be required. However, you may be surprised at how little gear is actually needed, and how much can be accomplished with it!

About Thomas: Thomas has over 25 years experience painting en plein air in the Oregon and California area. He taught painting and drawing for ten years at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and is well-respected for his ability to instruct and inspire his students. He has been juried into three prestigious Plein Air events for Summer 2010, and will be leading two other workshops as well -- with a third one now in the proposal stage to be held on Vancouver Island, Canada, in late September. --Strengthen your Visual Sensitivity and Creative Visual Language with Michael Orwick--
This workshop is designed to explore the fundamental reasons behind a painting's success as you create your own masterpiece. Class is March 26, 27 and 28, 10 am to 4 pm daily.

Through informative conversations and step-by-step demonstrations, students will gain an understanding of the interrelated components of painting- including value, shape, color, and edge relationship. You'll be painting right alongside artist Michael Orwick. Each of you will be given personal attention and friendly critiques.

Michael will also discuss the benefits and drawbacks of photo references. He will provide some reference material for you, but you are encouraged to bring your own landscape photos to paint. Michael will emphasize emotion, color, composition, and ways to turn a photo into a spirited painting.

Emphasis will be placed on composition, editing and selection skills as well as clarifying light effects for strong, personal design. You’ll study the power and importance of balance, unity, variety, interest and contrast through the tonal and color aspects of your paintings. You'll also learn about mixing colors from a limited palette while still achieving dynamic light and shadow effects with lively color. You’ll discover how values and temperature work to keep your paintings in harmony.

On Saturday after class (4:30-5:30) a special reception with appetizers and wine is being offered free of charge at Dragonfire gallery for this group.

Bonus: Get ready for painting outdoors with a Plein-air equipment overview and suggestions list.

"Painting Expressive Still-Lifes in Oils" Saturday workshops with Eric Jacobsen

This class is open to beginners on up. We will cover composition,
color, edges and the use of expressive brushstroke to give life and

spirits, and a drop cloth. Also, bring a lunch and something to drink.

You are invited to apply for acceptance to the 10th Annual Silverton Fine Arts Festival, to be held August 21 and 22, 2010, in Silverton, Oregon. Our goal for this festival is to celebrate the virtuoso talents of our finest local and regional artists, as well as to provide the public and our selected exhibitors with a show of the highest quality. The site, historic Coolidge–McClaine Park in the heart of Silverton, on the banks of Silver Creek, is a beautiful area surrounded by towering oak and Douglas-fir trees. It is a popular summer gathering place and a wonderful setting for the festival.

Silverton area artists, art patrons and community leaders involved in event planning are committed to providing pre-event and on-site service for all selected participants. We are further committed to quality marketing focused on art communities and major populations within a 50-mile radius (including Portland, Salem, and Vancouver, WA).

The Silverton Fine Arts Festival is within easy (and scenic) driving distance of Oregon's metropolitan areas, and is adjacent to the Oregon Garden and Silver Falls State Park. Now in its tenth year, this show has established an excellent reputation for both quality of art and entertainment and for good organization. It features entertainment and hands-on activities for both children and adults, and encourages an atmosphere of conviviality between festival attendees and participating artists.

The festival is open to all artists and craftspeople producing original work. A jury of individuals with experience as working artists, gallery owners, and festival directors, will select artists to participate based on images submitted. Application deadline is March 31.

Talking with Richard Ferguson

There are only 2 days left to see "Caught in the Moment", 611 N. Tillamook, Portland, OR. I visited today with Richard Ferguson, Director of Genre, Art Advocacy Center (GA2C) and Curator of "Caught in the Moment":

CB: Ok, you are the curator, are you an artist too?

RF: Yes, “they” made me put a couple of my pieces in, I resisted, but “they” won. *

CB: I’ve heard that the paintings are from all over the US?

RF: The majority of paintings are regional, meaning Portland and Oregon. I would say 75%. Paintings by artists from other states represent the remaining 25%.

CB: How did you make your selections?

RF: Artists were invited to show based on their demonstrated ability of what might be called realism, modern realism, classical realism and painterly representational.

CB: Tell me, if you have time, how did the idea for this show came about?

RF: Yes, I certainly have time. I believe all curators should be on hand to answer any question. People who visit galleries generally don't get to meet the curator, much less ask any questions. It shouldn’t be that way. These days when a person visits a gallery there might be no one there at all, much less the person who made decisions about the show. It is my personal mission to make changes in that regard. I know that it is a huge undertaking, but I believe that education for gallery goers as well as artists can change things. I feel that way and so do the others involved in Genre/Ga2C.

We’ve noticed that many galleries aren’t showing much work that can be classified as classic or traditional...We are advocates for traditional painting.

CB: What do you mean, exactly..that it shouldn’t be that way?

RF: The general population loves this type of work (gesturing to the paintings). They can’t get enough of it when it is shown. Recently at a museum I stood 5 people deep in order to see a Bouguereau. Realism is immensely popular, but critics still cover mostly “modern” work. Genre hopes to put more and more traditional work in front of people and to get critics involved too…in order to start a dialog.

CB: A dialog?

RF: Look, I would not expect to buy a ticket to the Symphony..go there and then learn that no one knows how to play. I would be very put off if I bought a ticket to attend a Trailblazer game only to spend an entire evening watching a team that didn’t know how to play basketball. When we go to galleries, shouldn’t we be rewarded with art that has been produced by people who have trained properly? The whole concept that art (that is any good) has to be “anything goes” is simply not accurate. We hope to invite dialog about the subject of contemporary traditional art among educators, artists, critics and art supporters and appreciators.

CB: What’s next for Genre GA2C?

RF: In September of this year we propose to launch another show that will encompass the natural world, figure and landscape. It won’t be in this location, it will be somewhere else (to be determined)…but we will implement all the same standards that we have in place here. We’ll find artists in the same way we did for this show. It will be outlined on our website.

CB: You did an outstanding job here.

RF: Thanks, I really am proud of it.

*editor's note: Richard Ferguson’s pieces were/are beautiful. He not only has a very keen eye as a curator, I guess we will have to just classify him as a modest man as well.

Art on the Boulevard Artist Mitch Baird is featured in the January 2010 issue of Southwest Art. Mitch is featured in the “Artist to Watch” section as the editor’s choice for up-and-coming talent. Mitch was contacted by Southwest Art after his painting “Morning Ensigns, Italy” received both the Best of Show and the SW Art Award of Excellence at the prestigious Annual American Impressionist Society show held in Denver, CO in October. Southwest Art Magazine has long been considered to be one of the finest art magazines by collectors and artists in the United States. The awards add to a long list of accolades Mitch has received over the years and his reputation as one of the premier painters living in the Northwest today continues to grow.
In celebration of his recent awards Mitch will have a collection of 12 new works on display at Art on the Boulevard starting on January 5th. This is more than just a plein air class; we will take a seasonal look at the world around us. The Winter season offers subtlety and elegance in its withdrawn color radiance. Capturing this quietude requires patient color mixing and studied composition. Join this ongoing study of light and play in a convivial exploration of the power of place out on location and the richness of analysis and refinement in the studio at The Tiger Cave Studio. As always, we will cover issues of composition, paint handling, and color palette for the season both precise and expressive.

We will spend about five of our ten classes out in the wilds of northwest Oregon or southwest Washington, engaged in painting from observation. And another five sessions in the Studio.

The new Civic Center for the City of Keizer offers an exciting opportunity for Northwest artists to showcase approximately 20 pieces of wall art. The pieces to be hung will be selected by jury and will hang from January 29 through December, 2010. The call for art is open to all Northwest artists and all mediums are welcome. All framing and matting must be professional in appearance. For safety purposes Plexiglas must be used, rather than glass. Art hung in this facility will be exposed to natural light and UV protective, non-glare Plexiglas can be used at the artist’s discretion. Unframed art must have edges that are professional in appearance and staples cannot be visible. Freestanding work is not being accepted at this time. Hanging wire is required on all pieces.

Dimension Range:

Width: 18” to 116”

Height: 36” to 48”

Note: It is anticipated that several of the spaces will accept more than one piece of art, a diptych or triptych.

Prizes:

First Place – The City of Keizer will be purchasing one or more pieces which will become part of Keizer’s permanent art collection

Second Place – $400 cash award

Third Place – $250 cash award

Honorable Mention(2)- $100 cash award each

Entry Date and Fees: The jury will make their decision based on the actual piece(s) of art. E-mail entries or CDs containing photographs of the art are not acceptable. The jury will consider only those pieces of art that are physically present. Each entered piece must contain a card with the following information affixed to the back of the piece:

Artist name, telephone number, e-mail address, title of piece, medium, and price (pieces must be offered for purchase).

The entry fee is $25 per piece entered.

Diptychs are $35

Triptychs are $45.

Pieces accepted for display in the Civic Center will be offered for sale to the public and when sold, the artist will receive 70% and Keizer Art Association will retain 30%.

Delivery of art: Friday, January 8, 2010 between 2PM and 7PM at Keizer Civic Center, 930 Chemawa Rd. NE, Keizer, OR.

Art being submitted by mail should be sent to: Keizer Art Association, 980 Chemawa Rd. NE, Keizer, OR 97303 and must include instructions and pre-paid postage for the return of the art. Art that is mailed must be received at the Keizer Art Association by January 8.

Jury Date: Saturday, January 9, 2010. All artists will be notified of jury results by e-mail the evening of January 9, 2010 (do not call). Art not accepted will need to be picked up at the Keizer Civic Center on Sunday, January 10 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. If the art was received by mail, it will be returned accordingly.

Note: the Civic Center does not have storage facilities and the artist must make arrangements to have their art picked up during the hours indicated. Art not picked up will not be insured and liability for it will not be accepted by the City of Keizer, the Keizer Civic Center or Keizer Art Association.

Reception: The unveiling and opening reception for artists, city dignitaries and public friends of the arts is Friday, January 29, 7 p.m. It will be held at the Keizer Civic Center. The reception will include an auction. For further information, see the Keizer Art Association website).

Public Viewing: Saturday and Sunday, January 30 and 31, all art selected by the jury for the Mayor’s Invitational will be on public display. (The art will remain on display throughout the year.) Other activities are planned for both days including the unveiling of the Thomas Dove Keizur Statue at the City of Keizer’s new Civic Center. These activities will be well advertised and attendance is expected to run high throughout both days.

Winter Solstice Art Sale (Non-juried)

You are invited to participate in the Keizer, Oregon two-day art sale event at the City of Keizer’s new Civic Center*. Each artist is invited to bring up to three pieces of art which will be displayed and offered for purchase on Friday, January 29, and Saturday, January 30. The Winter Art Solstice is a weekend-long event, with Friday night and Saturday being the largest event-filled days. Friday night is the Mayor’s Invitational which includes a reception and auction. This event will be attended by local dignitaries, businesses and friends of the arts community.

Saturday’s events are extensive and should be well attended throughout the day. It is expected that the entire Winter Art Solstice will be well-advertised throughout the Marion-Polk county area. The public art for the Civic Center is to be unveiled for the public to see for the first time, as will the bigger than life sculpture of Thomas Dove Keizur. (The statue is permanent to the site and is not offered for sale. The public art that has been accepted by jury through the Mayor’s Invitational 2010 Call for Art is tobe offered for purchase by auction.)

All work offered for sale must be original to the artist and not a reproduction or Giclèe print. All mediums are welcome. Wall art must be framed with a sturdy wire on the back to facilitate display. Unframed, wrap-around canvas is acceptable only if staples are not visible. All 2-D work must not exceed 48” X 48”and 3-D work must be freestanding and 50 lbs or less. (Exceptions to these requirements are only allowed if pre-approved and as space permits.)

Each artist can submit up to three entries. All art must be offered for sale. A 3 X 5” card must accompany each piece and must provide the title of the piece, the medium, price and name of artist. The card should be professional in appearance. Keizer Art Association reserves the right to refuse art deemed inappropriate for public display and to cease accepting art if space limitations become a factor. Entry fees are as follows and must be paid at time art is brought to the Civic Center:

KAA Members:

$10 for first piece;
$15 for two pieces and diptychs;
$20 for three pieces and triptychs.

Non-Members: entry fees are the same as for KAA Members but a one-time(not per piece) non-member fee of $5 is also required.

It has just been announced that Mitch Baird's "Morning Ensigns, Italy" has won the Best of Show at the prestigious American Impressionist Society Annual Show in Denver, Colorado. Internationally acclaimed artist Quang Ho was the juror for the show. In addition to the Best of Show award, Mitch also received the Southwest Art Magazine award and the painting also sold on opening night. Congratulations Mitch, you deserve it!

Eugene: A message from Brooks Hickerson

The "Save the Schoolhouse" Crestwell group is working to save their old school house at 2nd and D street, built in 1874. They have invited us to paintout at the schoolhouse October 7, 2009. They have also arranged a show for our paintings at the Crestwell Library. Paul Viel worked all this out for us. Thank you Paul. This is a great opportunity to paint in Crestwell and have a plein air show in Crestwell. I have put "Crestwell School house"on our October Calender (Wed. Saturday, Sept. 26th, is the date to bring your paintings to Emeral Art Center, 500 Main St. between 11am and 4pm, to enter the Springfield Mayors Art Show. The prospectus is on the EAC website: http://www.emeraldartcenter.org/.
The Springfield Show is a fun event. More like the Refuse in Eugene than the Eugene Mayor art show. All paintings that meet the prospectus criteria are hung. Your painting does not have to be jurored into the show. So bring a painting to the EAC this Saturday.

Friday, October 2nd, pick up our paintings at the Island Park Gallery in the Willamalane Center at C st. and Mill St. This is a very good show. I recommend it to anyone has not seen it yet. I have been several times. The Willamalane Staff, specifically Emily Heilbrun, did a great job of hanging this show and making cards for us titled "In the Open Air"...good name for a plein air show. Thanks Emily.

Chamber Music Amici the first resident company of the Richard E. Wildish Community Theatre in cooperation with Emerald Art Center is sponsoring an art contest to select art to be used on posters. They will select 5 paintings, drawings or designs ‘that capture the beauty and excitement of chamber music' to be used for publicity purposes for the 2010-2011 season. There is a stipend of $100 to be paid the artist for the use of the image on the posters.

Here is a message from Bonnie White together with photos from last week's Mosier paint-out:

This Tuesday (9/22/09) we are going to paint at Pheasant Valley Winery. If you've always wanted to paint the grapes just before they were picked, this is the opportunity. There is a My. Hood view from the top of the winery and lots of grapes on the vine. If you want to enter the vineyard, your shoes must be wiped with bleach to prevent you from carrying a disease or insect into the vineyard. Scott Hagee will meet us at 9:00 a.m. to give us the rundown. If you want to paint without actually entering the vineyard, you can do that without the bleach.

Dear Artist

We are reorganizing the Life Drawing (nude model) and Portrait Drawing (clothed model) sessions at Columbia Center for the Arts. Three-hour long Life Drawing or Portrait model sessions will be held for a cost of $10 to each participant. These are drawing, painting and sculpting opportunities for any artist who wishes to work from a live model in a comfortable atmosphere. Visiting artists are most welcome. Participants bring their own drawing supplies, vision and inspiration. This is an open studio setting without pressure or instruction.

The first Life Drawing model will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. this coming Saturday September 19th in the studio room located at the East end of the Columbia Art Gallery. (click on link below for Google Map to Columbia Center for the Arts). The usual format is 20 minutes of one and two minute poses, five 5 minute poses, two 10 minute poses, with short breaks, and a long break at 12:30. After break longer poses of 20 minutes or longer in 20 minute increments with short breaks for the model. If it is possible to let me know by Monday if are planning to come to this session. If this is not a good time for you and you would attend at a different time (if available ) please let me know.

We are committed to providing drawing opportunities useful to artists. Constructive feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Join award winning artist Mitch Baird for a local plein air painting experience capturing the beautiful Oregon landscape. The workshops will cover the fundamental principles of painting and composition as well as learning to ‘see’ as an artist.
