Join Elio Camacho for five days of plein air painting instruction on the Columbia River Gorge. Elio studied under Russian Impressionist Ovanes Berberian and is influenced by master impressionists such as Bongart, Sorrolla, and Fechin. Elio is was just named "Artist to Watch" in the July Issue of Southwest Art. Students of Elio can't say enough good things about him: (reviews and testimonials here).

If you have similar goals and want to learn to fill your canvases with color and boldness then this class may be for you.

Some of the things we will cover are:
  • Stroke angle and how it affect depth in thick loose strokes
  • Properly holding a brush to ensure you have limitless possibilities with your strokes
  • Brush speed
  • Time management and capturing the moment: The question most often asked is “how do you deal with the changing light”. We will cover efficient ways of painting so you dont waste strokes or motions.
  • Forget formulas and learn to “SEE”: Learning see nature as paint.
  • Color temperature
  • Harmony
  • Each day will end with a group critique

Deadline nearing! June 30 last day to submit application for Columbia Arts Plein Air Competition & Exhibit

Greetings Plein Air Painters! The deadline for applying to be featured in our September Exhibition is only 2 weeks away!!! Please read the submission details below so you can be included in this wonderful event. We look forward to another great year!

HOW TO APPLY
Unlike previous Pacific Northwest Plein Air application processes, this year’s will be conducted entirely online. All applications must be submitted by midnight (Mountain Time) on June 30, 2009. Columbia Center for the Arts will not accept applications directly. Applicants are asked to submit 6 digital images and an artist statement through http://www.callforentry.org. Please visit the website for complete instructions on how to apply. There is no fee to use this website. If you are new to CaFÉ, please allow yourself enough time to become familiar with the application system and requirements.

ELIGIBILITY
Any resident of the United States is eligible to apply. However, submitted artwork must have been painted on location in the Pacific Northwest: British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, or Montana.

LOCATION
The Pacific Northwest is Plein Air Painter Paradise. Each year, artists gather in the Columbia River Gorge to take in the stunning beauty of its black basalt cliffs, ribbon-like waterfalls, and lush fir forests. In November 1986, Congress recognized the unique beauty of the Gorge when it made it the nation's first National Scenic Area. In a very small area, there is a diverse range of climate zones for artists to paint. Nestled along the Columbia River, the town of Hood River sits between the two snow capped volcanoes Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Only a 10 minute drive to the East takes you to the Transitional Zone where the Cascade Mountain Range meets the Desert. The High Desert and Deschutes River are 35 minutes further. To the West, visitors can wander the temperate rain forest and discover alpine lakes and streams. Portland is 1 hour West of Hood River and the scenic Oregon Coast is 2.5 hrs West of Hood River.

SELECTION PROCESS
Phase 1: Artists interested in being featured in the Plein Air Show in September need to apply by the June 30 midnight mdt deadline, and be pre-screened in order to be invited to the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Exhibition. During this initial review, a screening committee comprised of regional art collectors, artists, and arts professionals will evaluate the submitted images to determine if the artist will be invited to participate in the exhibition in September. Thirty artists will be selected based on the plein air images they submit. However, the submitted images are not necessarily pieces which are committed to the show; it is our expectation and hope that the selected artists will create new pieces specifically for the exhibition and participate in the hosted Paint Out Event. All artists who apply will receive electronic notification of the results of the screening process. Notification will be sent to the email address supplied when applying through CaFÉ.

Phase 2: The Artists identified by the screening committee will be featured in the September exhibition. Accepted artists are highly encouraged to participate in the paint out event during the week prior to the show opening. Submitted work does not have to be completed during the paint out. All artwork must be original in concept and executed by the artist within the last two years. Compositions taken from published material or involving copyright infringement issues will not be considered. No student work under supervision is eligible. No work previously featured in the Columbia Art Gallery will be accepted.
Artists may deliver up to 6 pieces, with the understanding that there may not be room for all entries in the show, at least 4 pieces will be shown by each accepted artist. Accepted artists will receive follow up instructions including a detailed prospectus and a site map of the Paint Out locations.

Mt Tabor Park (OR) Centennial Celebration: July 25-August 1 & 2

A message from Shawn Demarest:
Greetings!

Planning for the event is moving along - and I'm thrilled to have Muse Art+Design as our sponsor. They will be providing tents and more. I've attached an updated entry form/flier. Please share this with friends and art groups. Also, to add some excitement and to tie in with the August 1,2 celebration we will be offering refreshments and prizes (probably raffle - maybe goodie-bags) to artists painting in the park on the 1st and/or 2nd.

Additionally, I have one painter and one encaustic artist (Thats right! Melting wax over an outdoor stove!) to do demonstrations. We're hoping to find at least two more willing artists to publicly demonstrate what they do. And, I need to find them quickly to give them the most publicity possible! Please share this with any friends/artists you think may be interested. Demonstrations would happen on August 1st and/or 2nd.

Paint with the Hood River Painters..Tuesday June 9 at Husum

A message from Bonnie White:
Last week's weather report showed possible rain on Tuesday, which has now been moved up to Thursday. Right now tomorrow looks like the best painting day, so tomorrow it will be. Please note that the time has been moved up two hours. This time of year you miss the best painting time by 9:00 a.m. and last week people arrived at 7a.m., 8 a.m., and 9 a.m. It worked out well, so we've decided to move the time up to 7:00 a.m., for those who can make it, and others may join the group at their pleasure.
We will be painting at Husum, four miles north of White Salmon on Highway 141. There will be a variety of subject matter, ie., the falls, the White Salmon River, some great buildings, lots of trees, and maybe even some rafters or kayakers. I do plan on getting there around 7, so I'll hopefully see you then. Bonnie

P.S. Since 9 a.m. seemed late last week, I had to buckle down and paint and almost forgot to take photos. I missed Donna completely, but captured (Steve and Buckley) her support group, on their way out, along with Todd and Rachel. Jan and I stayed a while did another couple of paintings, which I also didn't photograph.

"Professional Surface" one day workshop with Jef Gunn

Take your painting skills to the next level in this one day professional surface workshop with Jef Gunn:

Hide Glue Gesso & Preparation of small panels for oils
Saturday, June 27 9 AM – 4 PM $95

You won’t believe the difference. Get to know how great it feels to paint on this professional surface. The oils are absorbed into the ground and in two shakes the under-painting is dry enough to take further layers of oil paint without drawing up the under-painting. This allows for faster working and a longer, worry-free painting session. More importantly, it helps you keep your colors clean and bright.

This is the old tried and true gesso.

Register now! Space limited to 12 artists and it's coming right up!
